Overview Viral Infection In Children

As parents or new parents that just give birth,  you probably never want to witness your child getting ill and laid out in bed or sick bed.  But unfortunately, viral infection and children seem to be best of pals. As your child grows, he/she will get in contact with viral infections in school, at your workplace, from other kids in the neighbour even at your home.

Most childhood viral infections are not serious and include diverse illnesses such as cold with a sore throat, vomiting, fever, rash to name a few.  However, some viral illnesses that cause more serious disease such as measles, chickenpox, mumps, which are less common now due to widespread immunization.


If you notice your children are suffering from viral infection, doctors sometimes treat these symptoms with acetaminophen or ibuprofen. However,  children or adolescents with these symptoms of viral infection should not be given aspirin as it could lead to severe complications like Reye Syndrome, which cause the liver and brain to swell up.

  • Common Cold 
  • Influenza
  • Ear infection
  • Melissa
  • Polio
  • Chickenpox 
  • Smallpox 
  • Cold Sores
  • Shingles 
  • SARS(Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) 
  • Hand,  foot  and mouth disease 
Symptoms of viral infection in children include:
  • Eyes turn a dull reddish colour and release  liquid 
  • A sore throat 
  • Frequent bouts of vomiting and diarrhoea 
  • A blocked or leaky (runny) noise
  • Loss of appetite 
  • Continuous sneezing or coughing 
  • Body rash which consists of white pus-filled boils
  • The general feeling of malaise
  • Feeling extremely lethargic and wanting to sleep more
