What is Peritonitis

Peritonitis is an inflammation of the peritoneum, in a more refined way it is the thin layer of tissue covering the inside of your abdomen and most of its organs. The inflammation is as a result of a fungal or bacterial infection. This can be caused by an abdominal injury, an underlying medical condition, or treatment devices, such as a dialysis catheter or feeding tube.


Peritonitis is a serious condition that needs immediate and urgent medical attention.

SYMPTOMS
 The symptom will vary depending on the underlying cause of infection, but some common symptoms of peritonitis include:
  •  tenderness in your abdomen.
  • pain your abdomen that gets more intense with motion or touch.
  • diarrhoea.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • minimal urine output
  • fatigue.
  • loss of appetite.
  • fast heart rate. 
CAUSES
The following conditions can lead to peritonitis:
  • an abdominal wound or injury.
  •  a ruptured appendix.
  • a stomach ulcer.
  • invasive medical procedures, including treatment for kidney failure, surgery, or the use of a feeding tube.
DIAGNOSIS
People with suspected peritonitis should visit a doctor for immediate treatment. Delaying the treatment could put your life at risk.

TREATMENT
IV antibiotic treatment can help with peritonitis. peritonitis is considered an emergency and treatment are normally carried in hospital.
Treatment options will include:
  •  Antibiotic medication.
  • Surgery.
  • Wider Support therapies.
PREVENTION
 peritonitis is not always preventable, and it can happen without warning. However, some cases can be preventable such as :
         * Good clinical hygiene
         * Rapid treatment can help prevent some potential causes of peritonitis
         * Visit hospital for medical attention immediately after the onset of several stomach pain.
